How I Became a Yoga Teacher with over 25 years of experience

Almost 15 years ago, I started my first 200 hour certified yoga teacher training. I didn’t know anything about becoming a yoga teacher. I didn’t always relate to yoga’s mainstream culture and didn’t see many yoga teachers who looked like me.

But, I knew I wanted a personal transformation and healthier quality of life; and I was curious about yoga even if I wasn’t sure if I would teach yoga after my training was complete.

So, since there weren’t any online certified yoga teacher trainings available, I signed up for an in person yoga teacher training at a local yoga studio. My training was very rewarding, but it was very time consuming when it came to commuting; and it didn’t include any information about yoga helping to move trauma and stress through the body.

What I learned was that a yoga teacher training doesn’t have to take place in a yoga studio! Now, there’s more yoga teachers and students who look like me that are leading up trainings (although the number of black yoga teachers still has under 2% representation in the yoga industry), and yoga  can be used to address stress and trauma in the body which overwhelmingly affects Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.

Yoga Alliance, the governing body of yoga, approved my Certified Yoga Teacher Training. I’m now able to offer an inclusive, convenient and modern online yoga teacher training that’s affordable, with easily digestible information. Students will feel confident sharing their practice with their loved ones and communities by the end of the training; and they’ll be certified by Yoga Alliance to teach yoga if they choose.

The answer for me was to take a leap of faith, invest in a healthier lifestyle and be open to personal transformation. I trusted the call pulling me towards yoga, even if I didn’t know whether or not I wanted to teach.

Nearly 15 years later, I could not imagine a life without yoga. Teaching yoga and sharing my practice has transformed my life personally and professionally, especially as mental health, self care and trauma informed care have become more popular and accepted.
