Q&A: Why Do We Hold Trauma in Our Hips?
Common Question in Trauma Informed Yoga
Why Do We Hold Trauma in Our Hips?
This is a common question I receive when educating clients about Trauma Informed Yoga.
Let’s unpack it!
First, there are many definitions of “trauma.” In Trauma Informed Yoga, when we refer to trauma, we’re referring to a “stuckness” in the nervous system (specifically the Vagus nerve, another topic for another day!).
When you hear trauma is “stored in the hips” we’re talking about the psoas muscle which connects the lower back and hip joint. When people feel tension in the body and the body feels a need to protect itself, the posas tightens and can cause chronic physical and emotional symptoms, sometimes leading to pain.
During our Trauma Informed Yoga one on one sessions, we focus on hip openers to reduce stiffness and discomfort; and breathwork to reduce anxiety and stress symptoms.
This creates more stability, range of motion, mobility and the freedom to comfortably move with confidence, grace and ease.
