What Makes Teaching Yoga so Different from Pilates, Cardio, Cycling, etc?
People ask me all the time, what makes yoga so different from other movement based practices.
When I first moved to Atlanta, I spent the first 5 years running The Yoga House and teaching at a popular gym chain and at the Centers for Disease Control's 5 campuses across the city. I taught yoga, Aqua Fit Kickboxing, while also dabbling in cycling, pilates and bootcamp classes as part of my own fitness practice.
For me, what makes yoga unique is the honoring and centering of embodiment.
Embodied movements are internal experiences which guide the body in external movements through a combination of poses and breath work which focuses on self awareness, internal observation; and an exploration of the physical senses.
Embodiment creates space in the nervous system for healing, regeneration and release. It also aligns our mind and body connection.
“Yoga is the journey of the self through the self to the self” and these embodied practices are guideposts on that journey.
Enjoy a short Movement Meditation with me in the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This is a quick taste of an embodiment practice synchronizing the heart, mind and breath through the physical body.
Notice how you feel before and after this practice. Are there any subtle changes?
Where were your thoughts before vs after? How do you feel in your body?
Any shifts in your breath pattern?
